Deron Powers Wins the StatSheet MEAC Freshman of the Week - March 4th, 2013

StatSheet's MEAC Player of the Week for March 4th goes to Morgan State's DeWayne Jackson. Deron Powers has won StatSheet MEAC Freshman of the Week. And finally, Ramon Mercado is StatSheet's MEAC 6th Man of the Week. Jackson registered huge numbers in shooting (50%), rebounding (7 per game), and scoring (14.5 pts per game). The Morgan State senior put these numbers up in wins against Coppin State and Maryland-Eastern Shore.

Jackson added 14 points and 7 rebounds in 18 minutes in an 86-68 win over Coppin State. In the next game he added 15 points and 7 assists in a 58-45 win against Maryland-Eastern Shore.

This is the first StatSheet MEAC Player of the Week award for DeWayne Jackson. However, he has received an honorable mention. The runner-up this week is Morgan State sophomore Shaquille Duncan. Honorable mention goes to North Carolina A&T senior Jean Louisme. Ramon Mercado was the highest ranking player from Hampton, finishing seventh.

StatSheet MEAC Freshman of the Week: Hampton's Deron Powers

Deron Powers was on the floor an average of 31 minutes starting both games for Hampton. He was number one among all MEAC freshmen in free throws (7.0 per game). In a 57-50 win over Delaware State, Powers tallied 11 points and 3 steals. Then in a 77-68 win against Florida A&M, he dialed up 16 points and 4 assists.

Deron Powers has won the StatSheet MEAC Freshman of the Week an astounding 4 times. Rashid Gaston from Norfolk State grabs runner-up. Our own Dwight Meikle takes honorable mention.

StatSheet MEAC 6th Man of the Week: Hampton's Ramon Mercado

Junior Ramon Mercado, a 6-4 reserve guard, played an average of 23 minutes over the two games for the Pirates. In the win over Delaware State, Mercado took the lead in scoring and rebounding for the Pirates with 12 and 9 respectively. Then in the victory against Florida A&M, he led all scoring with 18 points and added 6 rebounds.

This is the second StatSheet MEAC 6th Man of the Week honor for Ramon Mercado. Karamo Jawara, a sophomore forward from North Carolina Central, is runner up. DeMetrius Upchurch, a senior forward from North Carolina A&T, receives honorable mention. Hampton has yet to win StatSheet MEAC Player of the Week.
